You Are Not Guilty: Family Constellations, Epigenetics, and Ancestral Trauma

The year was 1995. Pluto had just entered Sagittarius, and I was at the very beginning of the stormy processes of my adolescence. Having just turned 12, I was stepping into youth. This process was happening with a destruction both internally and externally, perfectly fitting Pluto’s transformative nature. I knew I had to find a way out of these crises myself. As I worked on myself, I realized that the things I was struggling with were actually the exact traits my parents were trying to overcome in themselves. We were chasing our parents' dreams and battling the obstacles they couldn't overcome.

Did we have to live our parents' destiny? I decided I didn't have to reject them entirely, but rather free myself from the negative legacy I inherited and strengthen the positive ones. It’s been 27 years since I started this personal growth journey in 1995. I now see clearly that the destination is not what matters; it is the journey itself.

Are You Really Responsible for Your Problems?

If I told you right here and now that you are not guilty for the blockages you experience in your career, relationships, marriage, or the internal communication you have with yourself, would you believe me?

  • You might have negative thoughts you can't escape.

  • You might be hitting walls of fear that prevent you from reaching your goals.

  • You might catch yourself repeating the exact same destructive cycles.

You are not the sole person responsible for this. But if it's not you, who or what is it?

What is Family Constellation and How Does It Affect Us?

Recently, the hit Netflix series Another Self (Zeytin Ağacı) introduced a massive audience to a very important concept: Family Constellations.

Family Constellation is a psychotherapeutic approach developed in the 1990s by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger. The core premise of this method is that individuals are connected to their family members going back generations through invisible bonds.

Events experienced in your family's past can directly affect your current psychological state:

  • Sudden and traumatic deaths, accidents, or suicides.

  • Wars, forced migrations, and violence.

  • Abortions, miscarriages, or excluded family members.

Such traumatic events cause disruptions in the family system. The Family Constellation method aims to recognize and heal these disconnections.

Epigenetics: How Science Explains Intergenerational Trauma

While Family Constellation is a therapeutic approach, modern science also supports this transmission. The branch of science that studies the inheritance mechanism which affects how our genes work, despite there being no change in the DNA sequence, is called Epigenetics.

Epigenetic research has proven that humans share a psychosocial inheritance field. We now know that the devastation of past suffering, wars, and migrations affects future generations. For example, studies on the descendants of enslaved populations or trauma survivors show a higher genetic predisposition to depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.

Why is it Important to Heal Our Ancestors?

This knowledge is not entirely new to psychology or genetics. Carl Gustav Jung developed the concept of the "Collective Unconscious" after studying Shamanic tribes and traveling to Asia. While modern societies have forgotten to remember and honor their ancestors, ancient teachings have always emphasized this bond.

According to some shamanic traditions, 75% of the emotions, fears, and limiting beliefs that cause us problems today come from our ancestors, while only 25% stem from our current or past lives.

African Shaman Malidoma Some summarizes this beautifully: "Many of our problems stem from our ancestors trying to complete their unfinished stories and unfinished business through us. It is the responsibility of the living to heal the dead and to heal their ancestors." We can shed the tears our ancestors couldn't shed, and say the words they never had the chance to say.

In conclusion; we are not guilty for what we go through. However, it is entirely in our hands—and it is our responsibility—to understand the lesson they want to give us and heal the source.

Who founded Family Constellations? Family Constellation therapy was developed in the 1990s by the German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger.

What is intergenerational trauma (Epigenetics)? Epigenetics is the study of how severe traumas experienced by our ancestors (like war, famine, or displacement) can change our gene expression and be passed down genetically to us, even without altering the underlying DNA sequence.

How can I heal ancestral trauma? Ancestral traumas can be healed through Family Constellation therapy, epigenetic awareness practices, meditation, and working with licensed psychotherapy professionals.
